Hard acceleration and braking can waste fuel and lower your mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent around town, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). DOE studies show that for every 5 miles per hour you drive over 60 miles per hour, fuel economy is lowered by 7 percent, so go easy on the brakes and gas pedal (Center for Climate and Energy Solutions).

Through staying at an optimal speed of 55 or 60 miles per hour, you can increase the fuel economy of your vehicle and thereby reduce you carbon emissions while driving.
